The Invisalign® Process

If you are in need of orthodontic treatment and are considering Invisalign then you may want to know more about the process. Our Halifax dentists share information about what to expect during every step of the Invisalign® process.

If you are considering Invisalign as a treatment option for crooked, gapped, or misaligned teeth, then you are probably wondering what you can expect from the treatment. Our Halifax dentists are here to walk you through the process and help you understand if this orthodontic option is right for you.

We explain exactly what you can expect from your Invisalign journey so there are few surprises if you do decide to go forward with treatment.

Your Initial Invisalign Consultation

You will begin your journey by scheduling an Invisalign® consultation with your dentist. At the consultation, your dentist will complete an exam that will include digital X-rays, a bite registration (how your upper and lower teeth fit together), dental impressions, and photos of your teeth.

Once all of your information is collected, you and your dentists will review your diagnosis and discuss your treatment options. Your dentist will write a prescription that documents the current status of your teeth, how you’ll be treated, and what changes you can expect from your tooth alignment.

Deciding if Invisalign is Right For You

If you and your dentist decide that Invisalign is the right choice for you, your dentist will send your information (including your dental impressions) to Align Technology where Invisalign technicians will create a digital 3D model of your teeth.

They will also create an animation to show what your teeth look like at the beginning of your journey and how you may expect them to look at the end. Once you approve the animation, production on your custom Invisalign trays will begin, which may take up to four weeks.

Starting Treatment With Your Invisalign Clear Aligners

Once your aligners are ready, you can pick them up at your dentist's office. Your dentist will ensure that your aligners fit properly before you take them home.

Although your Invisalign aligners are removable, our Halifax dentists recommend you wear them for 20 to 22 hours a day, and only remove them for eating, drinking, brushing, and flossing.

You will change the custom fit aligners every two weeks until treatment is complete. You will also attend an appointment with your dentist every six weeks to monitor your progress and make sure your treatment is going as planned.

What You Can Expect After Treatment is Complete

Provided you have followed your dentist's instructions during treatment you should be able to enjoy a straighter smile at the end of the Invisalign process.

Your dentist may recommend a retainer to maintain your new smile and to ensure your teeth do not shift from their new positions.
